Facebook

Hi all
Just to let you all know the group is now on facebook. Thought it would be a good idea as most of the youngsters use facebook on a daily basis so it can be updated more frequently.
hopefully I will get a link on here to it as well as adding links on the facebook page so kids can get to this site

100 years

Well we had a great time at our birthday. Many old members met up and chatted with old and new members. Lots of old photos came out into the open. Stories were told and memories were remembered. Overall it was a great weekend.
Photos will be uploaded to the website as soon as I receive them.
I would like to thank all the people that have replied with information and memories for the forthcoming book. We are hoping it will be ready for Feburary.

Easy listening

We are going on the radio!
Check out radio Derby 3.30pm on September 6th 2007.
Our GSL and our chairman will be on the radio talking about our forthcoming centenary and sharing information about the group and the activities that we are getting in place.
I am hoping something will be said about the book as well. Although I am starting to struggle getting it finished. Work seems to be taking its toll on me. I did manage to get another 4 pages completed last night after receiving some memoirs recently from a former scout 'Terry Freeman'. You will have to wait and see what he sent me. I have also received the details for our GSL and her favourite memories.

Are you a former member and would like to have your memories shared with us all. If so send me some details and pictures if you have them and I will try to add them to the book.

Unfortunatly I can't promise to return photo's so if you want to keep the precious ones either send me a copy or scan the image and send me the picture by e-mail to the group e-mail address
scouts@4thderby.org.uk

Join in the fun and pass your memories on.

Plant Sale

Well the plant sale has now been and gone, but the deliveries are still to come.
From what I have been told it was a good day, not just for the plant sale but for the clean up work that has been done at the hut. The group always has a clean up when its plant sale day. The females do the selling while the males do the cleaning(change of circumstances there I don't think it will last).
More work will need to be done now as some of the ceiling in the kitchen has given way and will now have to be replaced.
Hopefully the amount of money made from the plant sale will cover it.
It all went quite smoothly though and hopefully so will the deliveries.

Frontpage news

Children from the group made the frontpage this month.
Not of your regular newspaper but full colour on a magazine given free to 30,000 kids.
The picture was of three of our Beaver scouts, taken when they were joining in with Circus skills during our group birthday weekend.
Unfortunately there was no write up within the magazine but someof our parents did notice that the children were from our group.

Hopefully more headlines will be coming about soon due to our centenary next year. I have been asked to submit a small piece about the group for the Derby Evening Telegraph for a Scouting piece that they are doing.

What the papers say

We made the paper again today.

It may have only been about the computer that we won last year but it was more advertising for us in the local press.

The picture that was with the write up was of one of our scouts, Abigail O'Reilly. Abigail has been with the group since cubs and has attained good scouting knowledge along her way. She was part of a team that came third in the Foxwell competition last year and is now working towards her Chief scouts gold award.

While we were waiting for the photographer to arrive I started her on her personal challenge. Her personal challenge is to write reports for the scouts on the computer and to gain more knowledge on IT. As we were waiting I took her through the IT staged badge level 1. PASS! To make her personal challenge even more challenging I am going to get her to set up a page on the website for the scouts newsletter to be placed on, and the altered by the scouts themselves.

I am also taking another scout (Gareth) through his IT staged badge level 2, he only has one more piece to do to progress to stage 3.

Website

Just to let you all know the website has now been updated again!

There is now a links page that will take you to all your favourite local websites.

The three districts, Polaris explorers and Lynx network
There are even some forums specific to scouting. These are run by leaders for leaders. They give all sorts of helpful information regarding campsites, games, events, etc, etc.
If you haven't already done it add the group website to your favourites and keep checking back to see what we have been up to.

This blog will be updated regularly with more information about the group.
